Bakgarður 101

Bakgarður 101 (Iceland Backyard Ultra) will be held for the sixth time on May 1st, 2027. The event will be a traditional backyard ultra following standard setup and rules (https://bigsbackyardultra.com/backyard-ultra-rules/). A 6.7 km loop is run every hour.

What is a Backyard Ultra?

A Backyard Ultra is a form of ultramarathon where competitors must run 6706m (4.167 miles) in less than an hour. Each lap always starts at the top of the hour. After each lap, the remaining time in the hour can be used to rest and prepare for the next lap. This is repeated every hour until only one runner remains on the course and completes the final lap alone. The total distance covered by a runner who completes 24 laps (24 hours) is 100 miles (160.8 km).

Location: Mjolnir, (Flugvallarvegur 3-3a)

Time: The race starts at 9:00 AM, Saturday, May 1, 2027

Route: A 6.7 km loop on fantastic trails around Oskjuhlid and good walking paths along it and Nautholsvik (approx. 60% gravel and natural paths, 40% asphalt).

Distance: You run as many laps as you can!

Time limit: No time limit except completing each 6.7 km loop within the hour

Results: Everyone participating in the Backyard Ultra gets their total number of laps and distance recorded. Results will be published on timataka.net. Those completing more than 24 laps will have their achievements recorded on Big's website (https://bigsbackyardultra.com/world-rankings/)

Awards: Participation prize and certificate

A good aid station and runner facilities will be available at Mjolnir. The event atmosphere will be fun and lively all day long. Náttúruhlaup staff will be available throughout to assist participants during break times. Refreshments will be served at regular intervals.

Participants will receive detailed information about the event and rules well in advance.

Registration takes place at Netskraning.is and opens Friday, October 30 at 12:00 PM.

Registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable to other backyard races.

Name changes can be made on the registration website (www.netskraning.is) through April 18.

Beware of buying fake tickets from dishonest parties on Facebook or paying before receiving the ticket to complete the name transfer. NOTE: Each ticket can only undergo a name change once. Make sure to enter the correct name, date of birth, and email address.

Price: 16,400 ISK

Included in registration:

• Bib number, timing
• Rest facilities at Mjölnir, safety and course marshals
• Drinks (Gatorade) and light snacks (from Näak, fruits, and other goodies) at the aid station at all times
• Soup and bread for those in the race or finishing around 1:00 PM–3:00 PM on Saturday. Light meal in the late afternoon on Saturday and pizza on Saturday evening for active competitors.
• Restroom facilities in and near Mjolnir
• Participation medal and recognition
