Hafnarfjall Ultra is a trail run event that will be held for the 2 nd time on June 27, 2026, on the steep
slopes of Mt. Hafnarfjall close to Borgarnes town on the west coast of Iceland. The event consists of four
races, three of which are highly technical with relatively high elevation compared to the distances. The
four races are:

  1. Hafnarfjall Summit 15.08 km, 844 m elevation
  2. Hafnarfjall seven peaks 23.87 km, 1,218 m elevation
  3. Hafnarfjall seven peaks and two valleys 36.20 km, 2,316 m elevation
  4. Hafnarfjall family run 2.39 km, 155 m elevation

The three longer runs start in Borgarnes, while the family run starts on a gravel road at the foot of the
mountain. All the routes are well marked.

Hafnarfjall Summit (15.08 km, 844 m elevation)
The run starts in Borgarnes. From there the route crosses the Borgarfjörður Bridge and then up towards
the mountain. The route to the summit follows a marked hiking path. After 7.4 km the runners reach the
top (791 m above sea level) and from there the route goes down again, mostly following the same path
as on the way up, all the way to the finish line in Borgarnes. The route is technical and some parts of it
might be tough for people afraid of hights.

Hafnarfjall seven peaks (23.87 km, 1,218 m elevation)
The run starts in Borgarnes. From there the route crosses the Borgarfjörður Bridge and then up towards
the mountain. The route to the summit follows a marked hiking path. After 7.4 km the runners reach the
top (791 m above sea level). From there the route goes to the nearest summit Gildalshnjúkur (844 m)
and then to the other five peaks of the Hafnarfjall mountains, i.e., Miðtindur, Klausturtunguhóll,
Katlaþúfu, Þverfell and Tungukollur (663 m). At the top of Tungukollur (13 km) the runners turn around
and soon after that they turn left down the slopes of Tungukollur down to Tungudalur valley. At the
bottom of the slopes, there is a refreshment station (15 km). There, runners take a sharp left turn and
run down the valley, towards an old gravel road (17 km). After 20 km, there is a sharp turn to the right
onto the original route, all the way to the finish line in Borgarnes. Parts of the route are highly technical
and not suitable for people afraid of hights.

the valley and then down Hafnardalur valley behind the mountains. After some 22.5 km, Illagil canyon is
crossed and soon after there is a refreshment station at 24 km. After that, the route goes up towards
Mt. Hafnarfjall from the south. From the top (28 km), the route goes down again, mostly following the
same path as on the original way up, all the way to the finish line in Borgarnes. The route is technical
and some parts of it might be tough for people afraid of hights.

Hafnarfjall Family Run (2.39 km, 155 m elevation)
This run is especially designed for families of all ages and other people who do not feel like running to
the top and back. The race starts at a refreshment station on the gravel road at the foot of Hafnarfjall.
From there, the route goes up the gravel road towards the mountain and then follows a hiking path up
to “The Stone” of Hafnarfjall. At that point, the runners turn right and follow another hiking path down
to the gravel road, all the way to the finish line at the refreshment station.
